A birthday playdate

We invited some of Mary's friends over Friday afternoon for a birthday playdate.

I was feeling too lazy to plan any activities, so I decided the kids could just play downstairs. (That's what the kids want to do anyway, right?) That way the moms can visit while the kids play. (That's what the moms want to do anyway, right?)

We did get a playhouse the kids could help color if they chose. Here is Mary demonstrating.

After an hour or so of play, we headed upstairs for cupcakes.

The lighting of the candles. THREE of them!

Mary was so happy and embarrassed and proud when her friends sang to her. (It was precious to see her feeling so special.)

Then it was time to enjoy the cupcakes!

Mary was very appreciative of the gifts. Our house is a little heavy on the trucks and trains and a little light on the ponies and princesses. Her friends helped to remedy that.

So often we tend to structure our family around David's needs, and Mary is just along for the ride. For once, I wanted to slow down and help Mary feel like the center of the universe. I am deeply grateful that so many people came and made Mary feel so special.
